London Wetlands

On Saturday 1st December we went to the London Wetlands which is the largest man made bird sanctuary inside a capital city.  It’s a great place to visit if you like ducks, ducks and more ducks!Although the wind was very cold yesterday, the weather was fine and it was great to be outside.  The Wetlands is an old waterworks which was no longer needed with new reservoirs back in the 80’s, so it was converted to cater for wild life.  It’s well laid out and actually very interesting and educational. One highlight is the observation deck (which is inside) and has scopes for watching the birds.

As well as just having room to run and walk around, there is also a fantastic adventure playground — the best one we’ve come across in London and the kids had a wonderful time there. It was themed around the wetlands.

Probably the most fascinating thing from a cultural point of view was that while we were there as “something to do” probably 80% of the guests were serious bird watchers, with lots of gear and patience, sitting in the hides watching the ducks.
