I just want bread that isn't sweet

Shopping for loaves of bread has been a very frustrating task due to the fact that most US bread has a sweet taste.

Apparently this is because sugar/high fructose corn syrup is used as a preservative in the bread, rather than the chemical preservatives we are used to in Australia.

Buying bread from a farmer’s market is the way to go, a bit more expensive, but the flavor is so much better. When you don’t have time for a market stop, I recommend buying the Pantry Essentials brand of bread, which is the ‘home brand’ for Safeway. This stuff is so cheap at 99c and it tastes fine.
